The third sector – rising to the challenge? How the not-for-profit sector can use workflow tools to maximise the efficiency of their operations


The third sector, otherwise known as Not-For-Profit (NFP), consists of charities, membership organisations, housing associations, healthcare and educational bodies. It is a sector facing difficult conditions and the pressure to focus resource on core activities has never been greater.

However, a significant majority of respondents to an exclusive Computing survey of 118 IT decision makers, including those in the NFP sector, had only limited integration and automation of back-office business processes in place.

Poor information flows across an organisation hamper productivity and decision making on a large scale. Organisations also expose themselves to unnecessary risk from data corruption or loss caused by duplication and manual movement of data around multiple, stand-alone systems. These risks tend to be larger within the NFP sector because of the geographically distributed infrastructures that tend to predominate.

This paper will discuss in detail the findings of our survey and set out the specific issues being faced by NFP organisations arising from a lack of integration of back-office processes. The paper will then discuss how certain NFP organisations are using automation and workflow tools to overcome these challenges.
